San Marzano Tomato Seeds
Information: The San Marzano tomato is a classic Italian tomato breed with an intense, fruity aroma. Traditionally, it is grown in Campania. It has a slightly oval shape, is firm to the tough and a vibrant red colour with relatively few seeds and a thick skin. The skin can be removed easily and they taste particularly great in salads thanks to the fruit`s firm flesh. They are traditionally used to make sauces, tomato purée and tinned tomatoes. Some chefs swear by these tomatoes as the only foundation for making a good pasta sauce.
The robust plants grow to 1.5-2 metres in height and are immune to most common tomato diseases. They first reach maturity in July with several tomatoes on one offshoot, continue to mature in spurts until October.
Care: You can grow San Marzano tomatoes at home, in a greenhouse or outside. Optimum germinating temperature is between 20°C and 25°C, germination takes place after 5-15 days. You can accelerate germination by priming them overnight in a damp cloth. The young plant should not be planted outside until after the last frost.
Tomatoes need fresh, well-fertilised permeable soil, which is kept damp (but not wet!). They should be placed in a sunny, sheltered place with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day, if not more.
