Chinese Cabbage Wheelers Imperial Seeds
Info: Chinese cabbage originally comes from China and forms compact cylindrical heads. Chinese Cabbage `Wheelers Imperial` is a traditional heritage variety that produces solidly pointed layers of dark green leaves which form compact, heart shaped heads. Although a Victorian variety, it remains one of the best varieties for autumn sowing to stand the winter for harvesting in spring. It can be used raw as lettuce or cooked, as especially in many Asian dishes. Fresh Chinese cabbage is rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium and vitamin C, which makes it a particularly healthy, immersive autumn vegetable.
Sowing & Cultivation: Sow from July in open field in rows with a distance of 50 cm, approx. 2 cm deep. Latest sowing date is beginning of September. All brassica crops grow best in wind-protected partial-shade, in firm, fertile, free-draining soil. They can also cope with somewhat cooler weather, but needs regular watering (without waterlogging) and fertilization. Since it leaches the soil strongly, the beds should be able to rest between the cultivation 2 to 3 years. Harvest time for late summer sowing is in spring next year. It tolerates light frost. In case of permanent ground frost, take the heads with the roots out of the ground and store them in the cellar in a crate filled with moist sand.
