Beans are one of the oldest and most popular cultivated plants in the world. They develop from seeds in just three months to climbing plants up to 2 metres high, which are usually quite robust and very productive. There are also low-growing varieties that remain bushy. Beans like a semi-shady to sunny location and a loose, slightly calcareous soil. In mixed crops, beetroot, tomatoes and cabbage are suitable as neighbouring plants.
