Butterfly Gardening

Butterflies will visit any garden, however small if they can feed on suitable nectar plants and a well thought out garden can attract many species of butterfly.

Butterflies as well as bees have become increasingly rare in recent years due to intensive agriculture and the use of pesticides. Bring them back to your garden and support them with flowers that serve as a source of food and egg deposition.

Nectar plants for butterflies are usually the flowers with long calyxes adapted to the long proboscis of butterflies. One of the favourite nectar plants for butterflies, which is unfortunately not so popular with gardeners, is thistle. But there are also beautiful varieties for the garden such as the holy thistle or the ball thistle. There are also feeding plants that the caterpillars need to grow, including various cabbage varieties, sweet peas, rockets, carrots, fennel, dill, vetches, phlox and many more. Basically, the more diverse your garden, the more insects and butterflies you will attract.
